前言
　　這是一首以前線士兵的角度來看的歌，很少有歌會這麼直接的去述寫一個士兵的心境。戰爭這種事隨各人觀感不同，但對勇赴前線的士兵來說，他們是為了自己的國家，暫且不論盲目與否，其情操是偉大的。

　　而說到這就不得不提一部電影，護送錢斯(Taking Chance)，其劇情就是在描述護送官一路從異鄉陪著陣亡士兵棺木回家的故事。對於近半世紀不曾有戰事發生的台灣來說，新一輩人可能已經很難體會這種情境，但請試想當自己的兒女征戰異地，在你殷切期盼他歸來時，登門拜訪的卻是帶著悼念信的軍官會是多麼悲傷的一件事。

註1 Digging up bones 指的是失去一段長久關係的地方，在此指離家的士兵的思鄉情。
註2 通常護送官登門拜訪時，會宣讀由國防部長所寫的制式內容，開頭大概是親愛的XXX先生/太太，國防部長在此致上最高敬意告知您XXX已於何時何地以何種方式陣亡...etc
註3 美國喪禮的習俗是辦完悼念手續後所有人就離場，由埋墓人接手剩下的鏟土、敲鐘作業。
